Powertex Workshops 1,2,3.

Powertex is a reasonably new product on the Australian market. It is a fabric/textile stiffener and can be made water resistant. It has great potential for multi media artists. Workshop 1 is an Introduction during which students will create a sitting figure and learn to use the product.

Workshops 2 and 3 are advanced workshops where ideas will be put into practice. Students can create whatever they like in these to workshops. The use of this product is only limited by one's imagination. It is great fun to work with.

Painting on Silk

2 days or longer

Explore the beautigul art of silk painting. Using steam set inks to create bright and vibrant paintings. These can be framed or the art can be done on scarves or sarongs.

Watercolour Bold, Bright and Beautiful

2 days, preferably 5 days

A workshop for the more advanced artist using water colour at full strength to create wonderful, vibrant paintings. Add texture medium for interest. One of my favourite mediums. There is so much that can be done with watercolour besides the usual, lovely transparent work.

Create with Charcoal, Gesso and Glazes

2 day minimum preferably 5 days

This a wonderful way to create great depth in a painting. The accompanying painting was done in this manner. This could be a follow on to Getting Down and Dirty with Charcoal. One of my favourite ways to paint.

Getting Down and Dirty with Charcoal

Charcoal is one of my favourite mediums, it is so versatile. Create soft blended "paintings" like the one on the side or strong line drawings. the variety is endless. Learn to use compressed and willow charcoal, different ways of creating shading and texture. A great way to learn to draw.

Painting Animals in Pastel

This is a workshop for the more advanced pastel artist. Using Colourfix paper will allow up to 10 layers of pastel to be put down. The eyes are the most important part of a portrait, they show the personality of the animal. Learn the technique of painting eyes of different animals to give your paintings real life.

Pastels for Beginners

2 day or longer

Pastels are easy to use once the technique has been mastered. In this workshop students will explore hard and soft pastels, a variety of different brands, conte and pastel pencils. Different types of paper will be used to demonstrate the various results. We will look at shading, blending, line and colour mix. The use of kneadable rubbers for removing and blending pastel. This is a lovely medium to work in as long as you don't mind getting a bit messy.

Combination Air Brush and Brushes in Acrylics

5 days or longer

The air brush is one of my favourite toys. I love it to put down sky and background colours. The painting above is all air brush over texture pastes using acrylics. It is one of the most versatile tools an artist can have. No air brush experience is neccessary for this workshop. None of my students at the McGregor Summer School had used an air brush before and by the end of the two weeks they were doing great work with it. Some of these works can be seen in the My Student's Work section of this web site.

A good double action air brush is not expensive and a small compressor to suit is quite cheap from some of the Auto shops and hardware shops.

Acrylics - Using Mediums to Create Great Textural Effects

2 days or longer

Two of my favourite painting mediums are texture paste and gel medium. Learn to create great texture by adding all sorts of additives to gel medium and add to perspective with texture paste. This is a workshop for everyone.

Perspective in the Landscape

Create perspective with the use of warm and cool colours, large and small brush strokes, comparative size and light and shade. This is a workshop for everyone in any medium however participants should be familiar with their chosen medium as this is not a "how to use" workshop.

Composition in Acrylics

2 days or longer

Composition is one of the most important aspects of any work. Without a good layout an otherwise pleasant painting can fall flat on its face. Learn to leave out certain things or add others to create the perfect composition.

All levels however students should be familiar with their chosen medium as this is not a "how to use workshop".

Acrylics Free and Easy

2 days or longer

This is a workshop for the artist who has tightened up and wants to get loose. Learn to use acrylics with big brushes. You can creat contours in the landscape or a petal on a flower with two colours on the same brush on one strong stroke. This is a fun workshop and very helpful too.

Acrylics For Beginners

Contrary to many beliefs, acrylic paints are easy to use. They have the advantage of quick drying, however, this can be slowed down with the use of different painting mediums. Learn to handle this great painting medium, what to use with it and generally get great results.

Drawing With Graphite

2day or longer

Drawing is an integral part of art, be it painting, sculpture or a monumental archetectural masterpiece. You can't paint until you can draw, it is logical. Explore the different densities of graphite, learn shading techniques and how to do a tonal drawing from which a painting can be created. The humble pencil is one of the most important instruments in any artists tool kit.
